We’ve been on a journey at Whio Homes to really understand who we are, where we’re going, and what sort of company we want to build along the way.
We know we have an incredible product. We’ve spent years researching materials, construction methods and ways to create homes that are healthier, more comfortable and better performing. But something we’ve come to understand very clearly is that an incredible product means very little without incredible people around it.
The people designing it. The people building it. The people communicating with our clients. The people solving the inevitable problems along the way.
So James and I spent some time looking at ourselves first. What matters to us? What behaviours do we expect from ourselves? What do we want our team to be known for? And, importantly, what values do we want to carry across the businesses we are building?
That process led us to four core values.
And because we work in the trades, we didn’t want something overly corporate or fluffy that gets printed on a wall and promptly forgotten. We wanted something simple enough that it could actually become part of everyday conversation.
That word is W.O.R.K.
It stands for Worth, Ownership, Resilience and Knowledge.
W – Worth
Worth starts with understanding your own value and what you bring to the people around you.
Every person in our team brings something different. It might be years of technical experience, attention to detail, an ability to solve problems, great communication, leadership, or simply the willingness to turn up and give something a go.
But worth isn’t only about recognising your own contribution. It is equally about recognising the worth of other people.
That means treating your teammates, clients, subcontractors and suppliers with respect. It means listening to someone’s perspective even when it is different from your own and understanding that everyone involved in a project has something to contribute.
When people feel valued, they are far more likely to take pride in what they do. And ultimately, that shows in the homes we build.
O – Ownership
Ownership is a big one for us.
It means taking responsibility for how you show up, how you communicate and the standard of work you produce.
We are building a premium product, and the finishing details matter. There is a big difference between completing something because it is technically “good enough” and standing back from it knowing you are genuinely proud to put your name against it.
Ownership also becomes even more important when something goes wrong – because occasionally it will.
Being able to put your hand up and say, “Yep, that was mine. I got that wrong,” is incredibly powerful.
It gives us the opportunity to fix the problem, learn from it and move forward. There is far more value in owning a mistake and helping solve it than there is in spending energy trying to work out who to blame.
R – Resilience
Building homes doesn’t always go perfectly to plan.
Materials are delayed. Designs change. Problems appear that nobody anticipated. Sometimes you can do everything right and still find yourself dealing with something unexpected.
That is where resilience comes in.
For us, resilience isn’t about pretending things aren’t difficult. It is about how we respond when they are.
Can we adapt? Can we solve the problem? Can we learn something from it? And can we get back up and keep moving forward?
We want people around us who are prepared to rise to challenges rather than be defeated by them. Because some of the biggest improvements we’ve made as a business have come from situations that didn’t initially go the way we expected.
K – Knowledge
The construction industry is constantly changing.
Products improve. Building science develops. Regulations change. Technology evolves. And our understanding of what makes a genuinely healthy, comfortable and high-performing home continues to grow.
If we want Whio Homes to be a leader in this space, we can’t ever decide that we know enough.
Knowledge means understanding the products and systems we use and continually improving our technical expertise. But it goes much further than that.
It’s learning how to communicate better. How to lead better. How to work more efficiently. How to have better conversations with our clients and with each other.
It’s also about sharing what we learn.
We don’t want knowledge sitting with one person in the business. We want our team teaching each other, challenging each other and continually looking for ways to improve.
More Than Words on a Wall
Values are easy to write down. Living them is much harder.
For us, W.O.R.K. gives us a really simple way of bringing our values into everyday conversations.
How did you W.O.R.K. today?
Did you recognise your own worth and the worth of the people around you? Did you take ownership of what you produced? Did you show resilience when something didn’t go to plan? Did you learn something, improve something or share your knowledge with someone else?
We’re certainly not going to get all four right every day. We’re human, and we’re learning too.
But these values give us something to come back to. They help shape the culture we’re building, the people we want around us and, ultimately, the experience we want our clients to have when they choose Whio Homes.
Because while we’re incredibly proud of the homes we’re building, we’re equally proud of the company and the people we’re building around them.
Worth. Ownership. Resilience. Knowledge.
That’s what W.O.R.K. means to us.
What does it mean to you?
